Warwick Weedon : Please forward all articles & reports by noon Tuesday, thanks. Dear Members, CLUB KIT Many thanks to the 56 members who made the effort to vote. There were a lot of positive comments about the 2 designs and several members commented that it was very difficult to choose between the 2 designs. In the end Option 1 was the winner by 34 votes to 22. The best comment received was from Grant Langley?? ?Option 1 ( the other may be mistaken for a bulls-eye by certain irate drivers)?. The order has been placed and we expect to receive the kit before Argus. The tops will have full zips and the shorts will be available in bib form as well. Each item will only cost R150 due to Time Freight?s very generous sponsorship. The winning design of the top and shorts is attached. You will be informed as soon as these are available and we look forward to our new kit dominating the rides very soon! 2012 CLUB MEMBERSHIP Many thanks to most of our members for either paying their fees or advising us otherwise. Your co-operation is most appreciated. A full list of paid up members will be included next week. We would like to welcome the following new and returning members to our club and wish them many happy years of cycling and friendship within our family club. It is great to see everyone back and training. Saturdays rides were very well supported in both B and C groups. B Group had a most enjoyable ride around the Eston loop, with a 27km/h average. Well done guys on the good discipline. C Group rode to Comrades wall, and am sure there was a coffee stop somewhere.....where was it WW???? Steers? (Indeed!) The response for the Ballito ride this Saturday has been quite overwhelming. Unfortunately, there is no more space availabe. If you do still want to ride, you will have to organise your own lifts as all the places have been taken. The "B" group will meet at VIRGIN at 4.45am to leave at 5am. There will be a back up vehicle with water. Please bring your own 'powders' in a packet and food to put in the vehicle. Maybe a clean t-shirt so that we don't chase away all the customers at M&B.!!! The "C" group will meet at STEERS at 4.15am to leave at 4.30am.There will also be a back up vehicle. The breakfast booking will be made for 10.30am. PLEASE ALL WEAR YOUR CLUB KIT ON SATURDAY!! It is a club ride. The C group had a very large group today -thought there was an organised race ..haha...when I saw you all coming across Victoria Rd. Well done chaps. The B group frightened off some of its loyal members with hill sprints up Mayors Walk to the end of the lights, and then Old Howick Rd to Link Rd. I was pleased to run out of time and not do Link Rd!! As it is getting dark earlier and earlier, please all have a FRONT and REAR FLASHING LIGHT. It is for our own safety. Great to see you all out training. NEWCASTLE RACE: I do not have the details as my internet is 'down', but the Newcastle race takes place this weekend.. Please look on the KZN website for details. Keep the wheels turning Jill B GROUP Training for the Argus will continue this week. Meet at the Gym at 5 am on Tues, Wed. and Thur. This week is high intensity training, but next week will be easier as it is a recovery week. Saturday Meet at the Gym Victoria Rd at 4.45 am for a ride to Ballito. According to Jill Edwards , this ride is now fully booked . Thanks to Jill for organizing this ride and we are all looking forward to this event. Keep it Safe Suben 0832747526 C GROUP REPORTS Saturday?s Ride There were a lot of groups out on the road and we joined in with some for part of the time but generally our core group comprised Garth, Llew, Sandi, WW, Fran, Shelley & Helga who rode the full route. Leon and Mohamed turned early at the Lion Park turnoff. We enjoyed a very pleasant ride in excellent cool conditions and the breakfast and Cappa?s went down well back at Steers. We covered 93km. During breakfast we all decided to ride the 25km Cedara Classic the next day. I found out that there was 8km of single track so I bailed. Llew got to the race but discovered he had no brakes so he bailed. 15km into the race, Tom?s saddle broke under the intense pressure and he bailed. The 3 ladies ? Shelly, Sandi and Fran carried on serenely and finished the very enjoyable ride. Fran had a fall and has many bruises which she proudly displays. Ww Shelly, Sandi and Fran with Tom. Thursday?s Ride We followed the same routine as last Thursday, completing 3 repeats of Hesketh Drive and one of Adams Road, managing to improve slightly on last week?s average speed. I did not notice who won the downhill sprint this time (there was no fist raised in victory from WW!!) Tuesday?s Ride This morning there were 21 riders in CC ? a record as far as I can recall. It was lovely to see Yunus back after a break, and also to welcome Pete West to our group, after he moved back to PMB from Howick. We were also pleased to have Glen back after what seems like absolutely ages. We missed Leon and Shaun ?.where were you guys? The ride stayed together reasonably well going up Mayor?s Walk, and a very big bunch it was that re-grouped at the turn. Going back down we were also pretty tight, but from around the Mall it got a bit strung out. Sticky made a bid for the Mall Sprint, but got pipped by Ian, closely followed by WW. Not sure who won the Chatterton Hotspot. About half the group elected to do the loop. We heard afterwards that Peter K punctured, and Sandi and Llew stopped to help him. Thursday?s Ride ? Meet @ Virgin @ 4:55 for Cappuccino ride ? PEASE NOTE CHANGE DUE TO STRENUOUS BALLITO RIDE!! Tuesday?s Ride ? Meet @ Virgin @ 4:55 for normal ride Saturday?s Ride ? Meet @ Steers @ 4:30am to ride to Ballito. For those wanting a shorter ride you can turn en route. Sticky MOUNTAIN BIKE NEWS TERRY?S TALES Richard Robertson is an enigma. He is a musician of note but has a heart that can?t keep rhythm. It is this idiosyncrasy of his, which has been playing up lately, which led to his call for a slow, easy ride on Saturday morning, and that persuaded me to take down my trusty Ferreira (my Trek road bike?s name, derived from the Afrikaans song ? Vat jou goed en ??.?) from where it has hung in my garage for the past two and a half years and join him and Justin Henderson on what they billed as ? a leisurely ride? from The Old Main Brewery to the end of the tar on the Karkloof Road and back. Gullible me! These guys have been in serious road training for Argus and here I found myself in the unfamiliar territory of being on a bike with no suspension OR granny gear! Suffice to say they gave me a hard time, particularly up Heart Break Hill past Rotunda on our way home. Grudgingly however I have to admit that I did enjoy being on my road bike again even with the traffic and one particularly errant kombi taxi. Last Wednesday?s Ride Thanks to Justin for standing in for me in my absence and to the other group leaders for doing their bit. A good turnout of about 23 riders, despite the inclement weather and, so I?m told, a thoroughly enjoyable ride despite the mud and rain. This Wednesday?s Ride Same place, same time. Old Main Brewery starting at 3:30 pm. Doers and Donters Are you a doer or a donter? Answer that question after reading the following poem which came to me via a circular email of the KZN Landrover Club: Some members keep a club so strong, while others join just to belong. Some dig right in, serve with pride, some go along just for the ride. Some volunteer to do their share while some lie back and just don?t care. Some do their best, some help, some make, and some do nothing, only take. Some greet members with a smile and make their coming so worthwhile, while some go on their merry way, no greeting or kind word to say. Some help the group to grow and grow, when asked to help they don?t say ?NO?. Some drag, some pull, some don?t, some do, and consider ?which of these are you?? Subaru Classic The first local classic of the MTB season took place in perfect weather at Cedara on Sunday. I unfortunately couldn?t make it but by all accounts it was the super, successful event that it has been over the past few years. The number of entries speak for themselves with, 505 finishers in the 25 km race and 506 in the 40 km classic. That?s 1011 finishers. Wow!! Mountain Biking is alive and very well. You may recall that last year's winner was killed by a Coke machine that toppled over on him as he was trying to tip a free soda out. This year's winner was a genuine Rocket Scientist...no jive! Read on...and remember that each and every one of these is a true story..The nominees were: Semi-finalist #1 A young Canadian man, searching for a way of getting drunk cheaply because he had no money with which to buy alcohol, mixed gasoline with milk. Not surprisingly, this concoction made him ill, and he vomited into the fireplace in his house. The resulting explosion and fire burned his house down, killing both he and his sister. Semi-finalist #2 Three Brazilian men were in a light aircraft at low altitude when another plane approached. It appears that they decided to moon the occupants of the other plane, but lost control of their own aircraft and crashed. They were all found dead in the wreckage with their pants around their ankles. Semi-finalist #3 A 22-year-old Virginia man was found dead after he tried to use octopus straps to bungee jump off a 70-foot railroad trestle. Fairfax County police said Eric Barcia, a fast-food worker, taped a bunch of these straps together, wrapped an end around one foot, anchored the other end to the trestle at Lake Accotink Park, jumped and hit the pavement. Warren Carmichael, a police spokesman, said investigators think Barcia was alone because his car was found nearby. "The length of the cord that he had assembled was greater than the distance between the trestle and the concrete," Carmichael said. Police say the apparent cause of death was "Major trauma." Semi-finalist #4 A man in Alabama died from numerous rattlesnake bites. He and a friend had been playing a game of catch, using the rattlesnake as a ball. The friend - no doubt a future Darwin Awards candidate - was hospitalized but lived. Semi-finalist #5 Employees in a warehouse in west Texas noticed the smell of a gas leak. Management ordered people to evacuate the building, extinguishing all potential sources of ignition; lights, power, etc. After the building had been evacuated, two technicians from the gas company were dispatched. Upon entering the building, they found they had difficulty navigating in the dark. To their frustration, none of the lights worked. Witnesses later described seeing one of the technicians reaching into his pocket and retrieving an object that resembled a cigarette lighter. Upon operation of the lighter-like object, the gas in the warehouse exploded, sending pieces of it up to three miles away. Nothing was found of the technicians, but the lighter was virtually untouched by the explosion. The technician suspected of causing the blast had never been thought of as ''especially bright'' by his peers. And now the winner of this year's Darwin Award; as always, awarded posthumously; THE 2011 WINNER! Arizona Highway Patrol came upon a pile of smouldering metal embedded in the side of a cliff rising above the road at the apex of a curve. The wreckage resembled the site of an airplane crash, but it was a car. The type of car was unidentifiable at the scene. Police investigators finally pieced together the mystery. An amateur rocket scientist had somehow gotten hold of a JATO unit (Jet Assisted Take Off...actually a solid-fuel rocket) that is used to give heavy military transport planes an extra 'push' for taking off from short airfields. He had driven his 1967 Chevy Impala into the desert and found a long, straight stretch of road. He attached the JATO unit to the car, jumped in, got up some speed and fired off the JATO. The facts that could be determined are that the operator of the Impala hit the JATO ignition at a distance of about three miles from the crash site. This was established by the scorched and melted asphalt at that location. The JATO, if operating properly, would have reached maximum thrust within five seconds, causing the Chevy to reach speeds well in excess of 350 mph and continuing at full power for an additional 20-25 seconds. The driver, and soon-to-be pilot, would have experienced G-forces usually reserved for dog fighting F-14 jocks under full afterburners, causing him to become irrelevant for the remainder of the event. However, the automobile remained on the straight highway for about 2.5 miles (15-20 seconds) before the driver applied and completely melted the brakes, blowing the tires and leaving thick rubber marks on the road surface, then becoming airborne for 1.4 miles and impacting the cliff face at a height of 125 feet, leaving a blackened crater 3 feet deep in the rock. Most of the driver's remains were not recoverable.. Epilogue: It has been calculated that this moron attained a ground speed of approximately 420-mph, though much of his voyage was not actually on the ground. Ww CONTACT DETAILS SPONSORS Gill Bure ? Warwick Weedon : Please forward all articles & reports by noon Tuesday, thanks. Dear Members, Attached are several photographs taken on the club ride to Ballito on Saturday. Last week Terry Thompson included an excellent poem within his report. I think it is very relevant, especially with our Midmar-Notts race coming up and I reproduce it here for easier reading: Some members keep a club so strong, while others join just to belong. MIDMAR NOTTS RACE: Please could members contact Gill or Jill with regards to marshalling at our race. We really need your help to keep it safe. The marshal?s will be required to meet at the dam at 5.45 and report to Suben. We will withdraw everyone at 11.30. This is our club race, and we need everyone?s support. Many thanks Jill 2012 CLUB MEMBERSHIP Attached is our paid up membership list as at 6 Feb 2012. Please check to see if all your details are correct. Thank you. ROAD A BIG THANK YOU TO JILL EDWARDES FOR ORGANISING THE BALLITO RIDE, IT WAS SUCH A WORTHWHILE CLUB "GEES" EXERCISE. WE ALL GOT TO KNOW EACH OTHER THROUGH BROKEN SPOKE AND PUNCTURE - AND HOPE TO DO ONE ANNUALLY. A BIG THANK YOU TOO TO CHARLES EDWARDES AND CATHERINE BASSAGE, THE DRIVERS OF THE VEHICLES, YOUR HELP IS REALLY MUCH APPRECIATED, WE COULD NOT HAVE DONE THIS RIDE WITHOUT BACK UP VEHICLES. Gill 2012 SA Veterans and Schools Cycling Championships KZN Breaking News !! Please would you inform members of Burg Wheelers Cycling Club that Time Freight is the title sponsor of the 2012 Cycling South Africa National Time Trial and Road Championships for Vets and Schools. The championships will be presented in Durban and Westville by Cycling KZN (Kelvin du Sart and his team) during the period 22nd to 25th March. The 2012 SA Champs will be known as ?The Time Freight 2012 SA Road and Time Trial Championships for Veterans and Schools?. It is the national show piece event for the Vets and Schools categories. It will be great if you would encourage as many as possible Burg Wheelers members to participate and show the new club kit, and it would be an indescribable pleasure to see any BWCC member handed a medal at prize giving. Kind regards Charles CAPTAIN?S REPORT The morning rides have picked up so much over the past three weeks, we will need the traffic department to escort us through town! This especially applies to the C group. Their group has not stopped growing. Well down chaps! The 'B' group have been doing a lot of high intensity training for the Argus. Last Thursday we had a group of 18 members riding Hesketh Drive x5 at 90% HR. Well done to all of you. You will reap the benefits. The BALLITO ride was FANTASTIC!!!! I have only heard good reports from everyone who rode. A special mention must be made to the "C" group who finally completed the ride in 7hrs!!! in temperatures of 43C. You are all Gold medallists!! That was one huge accomplishment for all of you. So, never say never. If you try, you can do it. It's like taking a Lotto ticket. If you do not buy one, you cannot expect to win, so if you do not try out something, you will never know whether you can do it. A BIG thank you to Charles Edwardes and Catherine Bassage for being the back-up vehicles for the 2 groups. Without you, we would have suffered even more than we did. You were there when someone needed help. Dave Davie had to even 'push' Johns kombi up the hill as it was battling...........oh,maybe it was Dave taking strain!!!!! Well done Dave. You made it! The LASSEN SERIES will be starting on 04/03. Kelvin needs the money for all 6 events to be paid up front as otherwise someone will run at a loss. The cost is R720 for the series. Entries close on 17th Feb. Riders wanting to enter an individual event will have to pay R250. If they do not receive 140 entries, the series will be cancelled, and your money refunded. CONTADOR BANNED FOR DRUGS Madrid - Spain's cycling supremo Juan Carlos Castano on Monday voiced his disappointment over a two-year doping ban imposed on Alberto Contador by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Former Spanish Tour de France champions Carlos Sastre and Pedro Delgado were also not amused by the sanction which also includes Contador being stripped of the 2010 Tour title and that from the 2011 Giro d'Italia. The Spanish federation RFEC had originally not banned Contador for testing positive for clenbuterol at the 2010 Tour as the rider protested his innocence and blamed the result on contaminated meat. But the CAS, in the high-profile case, upheld an appeal by the world governing cycling body UCI and the World Anti-Doping Agency. While Contador was yet to comment, Castano was not pleased with the outcome after hoping for positive news."It is very sad and disagreeable news for Spanish cycling in particular and for sports in our country generally," he said. The 2008 Tour winner Sastre and Delgado, a champion at the famous race in 1988, found harsh words for CAS. Keep the wheels turning. Jill B GROUP Saturdays ride to Balito This was a well organized club ride that we all experienced. I enjoyed the distance and scenery but not the BIG climbs. Bad timing ? look at John Dunton in the background! Thanks to Jill Edwards for all the organizing, Charles Edwards for driving the back up vehicle, and John Dunton and Gavin Green for the use of their vehicles. Hope this will be an annual event. Faizel pulling the bunch up one of the MANY hills!! Tue, Wed, Thur meet at the Gym 5 am . This is a recovery week, ride in zone 2. Saturday Ride Steers 5 am - Ride to Comrades Wall via Foxhill and Dards Keep it Safe Suben 0832747526 C GROUP REPORTS Saturday?s Club Ride to Ballito There were 11 of us that set off at 04:30. Luckily we had spare wheels as we needed 3 of them! We suffered 4 punctures, 1 torn tire, 2 broken spokes and numerous items falling off bikes due to the rough terrain and numerous potholes. The ride was far tougher than any of us imagined and it took us 6 hours of riding time at an avg of 21kph to reach our destination. Our total time was 7h 15 min as we had many stops to refuel, fix something or other and regroup. Jill warned us to take plenty of liquid and food but I must say that after several hours of climbing I was gatvol of sweet stuff like GU and sports drinks. Luckily Dave Bure had left his sarmies in our vehicle and I really enjoyed the cheese and Bovril ones!! As Jill mentioned, the temperature reached 43* in the bottom of the valleys and coupled with 100% humidity ? this meant lots of liquid consumed and unfortunately water became very scarce and a prized commodity towards the end. Nevertheless it was most enjoyable riding with the group and I would like to thank them very much for doing their bit to help make it so enjoyable. It was a wonderful sense of achievement to reach Ballito where we were warmly welcomed by the BB?s. Regrouping in the shade towards the end of the ride. Garth in the foreground. Tom said the highlight of the trip for him was when Gail called out ?wheels? and it turned out to be Catherine in the backup vehicle! When Helga punctured, Garth offered to stay with her and help while the group pushed on. A couple of km?s down the road we saw a sight not for the faint hearted ? a hill that seemed to go straight up and so high that the road disappeared into the clouds. As we approached this mountain with trepidation, there was a lot of hooting behind us as Catherine roared past us with Garth and Helga and their bikes. We thought, you lucky guys, as Catherine would drop them at the top of the mountain pass. However, she was not so kind and braked to a rapid stop at the foot of this enormous climb, which they were forced to ride up with cold legs!! We would like to re-iterate our thanks to Catherine for being an absolute star and encouraging us often from the luxurious depths of her air-conditioned vehicle. Thanks also go to Sharon for coming down to help transport riders and bikes back, Jill and Gavin for setting up this most enjoyable club rides and to the club for sponsoring the drinks and the brunch which was most appreciated. ww Thursday?s Ride We decided to revert from Hesketh hill training to the normal route, given the long ride the CC?s would undertake on Saturday. The group was 12 strong, and we had a lovely ride, on a beautiful morning. Saturday?s Ride Congrats to all those CC?s who did the Ballito ride last Saturday, all 127 kms of it, in, I believe, at times 43?C. That was a most impressive effort, guys! Eddie headed up a group of 6, comprising himself, Gordon, Ian Henderson, another Ian, Shelly and Dale. They set off at the normal 5:00am from Steers. At the end of the Dards Gordon, (the other) Ian and Dale headed back towards Polly?s while the remaining 3 continued on, turning at the intersection to Inchanga, and back via Polly?s - a total of 73km. Tuesday?s Ride We broke last week?s record with an alltime high of 25 riders this morning. Pete was back, as were Nico and Glen. It was great to welcome Richard, all the way from Cape Town. He will be doing his Argus training with us as he is spending his weekdays in PMB on business. He has given himself an additional handicap by riding MTB, with knobblies, nogal! I was sorry to hear that Shaun is not well ? get better quickly, we miss you! Coming down Town Bush Road my cellphone bounced out of its pouch as I went over a speed hump, and typically distributed itself all over the road. While I was still wondering whether it was my back light that had perhaps fallen off, Gail very kindly turned and picked up all the bits. As a result I did not see who won the Mall Sprint or the Chatterton Hotspot (lucky for WW, who was doing a recovery ride with Fran over in Hayfields?). Undaunted, GG and I did the loop. Thursday?s Ride ? Meet @ Virgin @ 4:55 for normal ride ? recovery week Tuesday?s Ride ? Meet @ Virgin @ 4:55 or Makro at 5:05 for speed work Saturday?s Ride ? Meet @ Steers @ 5:00am to ride to Cato Ridge garage, out via Fox Hill and back via Polly?s S The Fast One in Vereeniging 5 February 2012 Dear Warwick, I trust you had a good ride to Ballito and you all arrived there safely and enjoyed your breakfast. On Thursday last week you asked me to give you a rundown on the Fast One ? this race was originally called the Pick & Pay Hyper to Hyper and I rode it for the first time in 2003 and have ridden it every year since. The race was originally ridden from the Pick & Pay Hypermarket in Heidelberg to Vereeniging and the distance was 101kms. In 2007 they changed the name of the race to The Pick & Pay Fast One and the start of the race was moved to Nazrac (sp?) in Jhburg and the distance increased to 106kms. In 2010 a decision was made (due to logistical problems and people complaining about starting in Jhb and ending in Vereeniging) to keep the race in Vereeniging. They are now using the Midway motor car race track as the start and finish venue. We normally leave on Saturday morning at 6, have the traditional breakfast at Wimpy in Harrismith and arrive at the P & P Hypermarket in Vereeniging for registration about 10:30a.m. We then move on to the B&B where we stay, check in, make sure that the bikes are all in order and usually have a short ride in the afternoon just to loosen our legs. In the evening we go out for supper (lots of good eating places around) and in the morning we drive to the starting venue where there is plenty of parking space and one can warm up by riding round the race track. To give you some kind of an idea of the route, after the first 10kms, we were averaging 42.5kph. I started with the VC batch and my time this year was 3hrs 30mins and last year was 3hrs 54mins. It looks like all the riding and training with the ?C? group has paid off! After the race we head back to the B&B for a shower and breakfast and on the road by 11:45 and back in Pmb by 16:30hrs. It?s a good weekend, and I really hope that next year we can put together a group from Burgwheelers to go up again and kick some butt! Regards, Dale. MOUNTAIN BIKE NEWS TERRY?S TALES Mounting Biking news is scarce. The lull before the storm of the coming national and international events scheduled for what I call the Cascades Mountain Biking Wonder World. I use this name for it because of the amazing array of tracks, adrenalin pumping drop offs and skill and courage testing rock gardens that a dedicated few have provided for so many. Thanks guys! You deserve every accolade and reward which you get for your vision and hard work. Yes mountain biking news is scarce at this time of the year when we suffer the indignity of 95% of our number cross dressing for Argus. Like the bunch that set off on Saturday morning before the crack of dawn, in fact to quote Gill Bure ?Even before the first rooster croaked?, 4:30 am to be precise to cycle to Ballito via Wartburg. Some 127 km I believe. No doubt more will be written on that ride by the roadies elsewhere in this missive. With age comes wisdom. Justin Henderson persuaded me and my trusty Farria to join him on a leisurely 6 am ride around the Dards via the Lion Park. Good thinking Justin and thanks for a truly super ride. Last Wednesday?s Ride Once again 30 or more riders left Old Main Brewery at 3:30 pm for their weekly dose of rejuvenation. Thanks to the leaders of all the groups. It was once again an enjoyable afternoon?s outing. The group leaders that have emerged are: Elite: Kim Phillips and / or Johan Wykerd A Group: Colin Goosen and / or the three Daves: Bure, Davie and Hanbury. B Group: Your truly, Justin Henderson and Dr. John. C Group: Brett Fourie and A.N. Other Thanks to all concerned. This Wednesday?s Ride Same place, same time Old Main Brewery at 3:30 pm. Weekend Rides Our Lady Leader, Gill Bure is involved in putting together an approximately 45 km to 50 km MTB ride from Karkloof starting at 6 am with the Trail Blazer route of about 28 km, then on to Albert Falls Dam. Sounds great fun. For more information contact Gill at 082 772 9310. The CANSA Relay for Life is a relay walk which will go around the country club field for 12 hours through the night. The objective is to raise awareness of cancer as well as give you an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer by entering a team, supporting a team or giving donations towards a participant. Our intention is ride on a track from the country club and around Mark Robinsons pivots. There is no technical riding. We hope to get teams of 4 or 6, or for that matter, whatever. It is not a race and there are no prizes. We have not registered it with CSA and it is done purely as a fund raising effort which at the same time gives you an opportunity to have fun and to build some endurance. If an entrant is too serious, s/he may get a handicap or a mysterious puncture. As a local cyclist, I ask if you could please make up a team or two, or more, but not just your close cycling mates. Get some not so serious cyclists to join in. Spread the better cyclists out. You can?t win if it is not a race. You will win by getting many others involved and maybe tap some corporate sponsorship. Varsity College have committed to enter a team or two and they will be doing it as a Mtb team-building exercise to encourage mountain biking and support CANSA. If we can get enough support, and sponsors willing, we will try and get some fires going to keep wors rolls or some other sustenance going all night. If you sell charcoal or wors, you know what to do! The cost would be a minimum of R500 per team or solo entry, with a minimum of R50 per rider if over 10 riders. You may pay as much as you like ? no maximum. Please let me know if you are keen or if there are any others that would be keen as riders or sponsors. Please pass this e-mail on. I will forward more details to those interested. If you can?t ride or sponsor, we can find something for you to do. In view of road safety and cyclist awareness can we receive help from members to design a slide to see if we can get it published on the website? Shaun, Llew, Shelly, Fran, WW & Glenn. The roads were rather damp with mist hanging in patches. We did the Murray Road Loop and then climbed up Fox Hill to have a look. It did not look too promising so we returned to Steers via Murray Road. We suffered 2 punctures en-route which delayed the Cappa?s ? very frustrating!! Back at Steers the 6 of us attacked the hot drinks with gusto!! Thursday?s Ride Last Thursday we had a more modest group of 10 CC?s (J - esp for you WW!). We missed WW and Fran, who were doing another recovery ride in Hayfields. Pete and Glen are now regulars, both catching up on their training for Argus. Approaching the Mall Sprint Gail and I made a break while the guys were snoozing. GG pipped me to the top, followed a ways back by the snoozers. The loop completed a most enjoyable ride. Tuesday?s Ride This morning we had a very large group. I did not manage to get a headcount, but would estimate somewhere between 22-25 riders. We made our way over to Makro where we had a very good workout doing pace-lining. Group discipline is very important, though, and this was not always in evidence ? we need to stick to the speeds stipulated, both for those passing on the right, as well as once you pull in to the line on the left, in order for the exercise to have maximum benefit for the whole group. We can work at improving on this next week. Wednesday 15th ? Meet at the track at 5am for 4 x 10 minutes with 5 minutes rest between. Thursday?s Ride ? Meet @ Virgin @ 4:55 for normal ride ? to include a number of sprints Tuesday?s Ride ? Meet @ Virgin @ 4:55 ? pace-lining at Makro Saturday?s Ride ? Meet @ Piggly Wiggly @ 5:30am for ride to Mount West. We will start by riding down to Midmar, then up to Mount West and back to Piggly?s. For those wanting a shorter ride you can head towards Notties from Piggly?s MOUNTAIN BIKE NEWS TERRY?S TALES Two things which I read this week gave me food for thought. The first is a quote attributed to Bertrand Russell ?One of the symptoms of an approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that one?s work is terribly important.? The second is from a book given to me by my son entitled, Stories for a Dad?s Heart, ?In our world, contentment is a strange street vendor, roaming, looking for a home, but seldom finding an open door. This old salesman moves slowly from house to house, tapping on windows, knocking on doors, offering his wares: an hour of peace, a smile of acceptance, a sigh of relief. But his goods are seldom taken. We are too busy to be content ??.? Well last Wednesday afternoon about 25 people answered contentment?s knock and enjoyed the delights of good friendships and fantastic mountain biking terrain on a warm drizzly afternoon. An eventful ride for us B groupers with a fall (no damage) and two punctures within the first 7 km. Then at about the half way mark of our 28 km ride my front de-railer stubbornly refused to drop onto the small chain ring. At the next re-grouping stop a retired engineer (not mechanical engineer!!), he of the uneven heart beat, ever helpful, whipped out his multi tool?. (In the interests of dignity and decorum I should explain that a multi tool is a device much like a Swiss Army knife with a multitude of screw drivers and other devices for fixing bicycles) and proceeded to tighten and loosen and twist and pull until, hey presto, I had the joyful experience of riding the rest of the ride on a single speed!! Contentment comes in many shapes and forms! This Wednesday?s Ride ? 15 February Same time same place ? Old Main Brewery 3:30 pm. Karkloof Wednesday Rides: Early Warning With all the many kilometres of fantastic MTB track available from the Karkloof Polo Club we are going to make the first Wednesday afternoon of every month a Karkloof ride. It?s an extra 15 minutes or so drive from PMB and really well worth it. With the days already getting shorter we still need to keep the starting time at 3:30 pm. There is plenty of safe, secure parking AND they will open the pub for us. Please diarise now. The first Karkloof Wednesday afternoon ride will be 7 March, so you have ample warning. KZN ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS The KZN Road Championships took place over the weekend of 21st and 22nd January in Durban. The reason that this is being mentioned in the KZN MTB newsletter is due to the fact that a number of our riders participated and performed very well in this event. * Cameron Wright took gold the Time trial event on Saturday and backed it up with another gold medal on Sunday in the U12 boy's category of the road race. * Brendon Davids took gold in the U23 Men's Road race. * Candice Neethling took gold in the Elite Ladies race. * Burry Stander took gold in the Elite Men's race. Another interesting statistic was that the first six riders across the finish line in the main 126km race were all mountain bikers. Well done to all who took part. Keep up the good work. In life everything is a question of priorities The latest in low maintenance MTB tyres ? should be available for the Sani2C. KZN ? High alert: the emergency complications of diabetes Author: Discovery Vitality (10 Oct 2011) Diabetes has become such a chronic long-term condition that it?s easy to forget about the serious acute complications that can arise, which can lead to a coma or death if not treated. There are only two types of emergencies ? having very high glucose and having a very low glucose. The warning signs of an looming coma range from a mild headache to hallucinations.. If not identified or treated both types of emergencies can lead to serious irreversible complications including brain damage, kidney failure and death. When your glucose is very very high The fundamental issue in diabetes is raised blood glucose levels. Medically this is called hyperglycaemia. When glucose rises very rapidly or to very high levels, it can result in a diabetic ketoacidotic coma or a hyperglycaemic coma. Diabetic ketoacidotic coma This happens in type 1 diabetes and the high risk people include children and teens. A person can go into a ketoacidotic coma within a few hours. A person in a ketoacidotic crisis presents with: * a complete lack of insulin in the body * very high glucose levels * dehydration * break down of muscle * abnormal potassium, sodium and other electrolyte levels. Causes of ketoacidotic crisis or coma * A person who hasn?t been diagnosed with diabetes as yet * Missing an insulin dose * Illness such as gastroenteritis, nausea and vomiting * Not adjusting insulin when glucose is high What to look out for if you suspect you may be going into a ketoacidotic crisis or coma * Shortness of breath * Fruity smelling breath * Nausea and vomiting * Severe fatigue * Abdominal pain and headache * Thirst * Passing urine more often. Danger signs to watch out for * Slurred speech * Blurred vision * Reduced concentration * Coma. What you must do if yoususpect you may be going into a ketoacidotic crisis or coma Get to a casualty unit as soon as possible. Treatment for a person who is ketoacidotic * Rehydration * Insulin * Managing electrolyte abnormalities. What you can do to prevent going into a ketoacidotic crisis or coma * Look out for the symptoms of a diabetic ketoacidotic coma * Don?t skip insulin doses * Learn to adjust your glucose when levels are high. Hyperglycaemic coma This happens in type 2 diabetes and the high risk people include the elderly and the infirm. A person can go into a hyperglycaemic coma within a few days. A person in a hyperglycaemic coma presents with: * a resistance to insulin * very high glucose levels, and * dehydration. Causes of hyperglycaemic crisis or coma * Skipping oral diabetic medicine or unable to keep medicine down * Nausea and vomiting * Dehydration * Illness like flu, gastroenteritis etc What to look out for if you suspect you may be going into a hyperglycaemic crisis or coma * Tiredness * Nausea and vomiting * Thirst * Passing large amounts of urine * Blurred vision * Headache. Danger signs to watch out for * Slurred speech * Blurred vision * Reduced concentration * Coma. What you must do if yoususpect you may be going into a hyperglycaemic crisis or coma Get to a casualty unit as soon as possible. Treatment for a person who is in hyperglycaemic crisis or coma * Rehydration * Treatment of underlying condition * Insulin What you can do to prevent going into a hyperglycaemic crisis or coma * Speak to your doctor if you are unable to take your oral diabetes medicines * Always drink plenty of fluids. When your glucose is very very low Unfortunately too little glucose is as dangerous as too much. The treatment for diabetes aims to lower blood glucose levels. If treatment is not matched to food intake then it could overshoot the mark leading to dangerously low blood glucose levels or hypoglycaemia. Hypoglycaemia can occur whether you are using insulin or oral diabetes medicine. Low blood sugar is extremely dangerous because the brain is so reliant on blood glucose for survival. Hypoglycaemic coma This happens in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and can affect anyone. It can take a few minutes to a few hours for a person to go into a hypoglycaemic coma. Very low blood glucose levels leads to starvation of the body and particularly the brain of vital energy. Causes of hypoglycaemic coma * Overdosing on insulin or oral diabetes medicine * Meals or snacks that are too small, delayed, or skipped * High amounts of physical activity * Alcoholic beverages * Other medicine that may cause low blood sugar, for example bactrim, quinine etc. What to look out for if you suspect you may be going into a hypoglycaemic crisis or coma Low blood sugar can cause almost any symptom. These include dizziness, hunger, irritability, headache, trembling, sweating and confusion. Danger signs to watch out for As the low blood sugar begins to affect the brain even further, progressive incoherence, immobility and ultimately convulsions and coma can result. What you must do if yoususpect you may be going into a hypoglycaemic crisis or coma If you notice sweating, trembling or other signs of a glucose low, you need to drink a half a cup of sugar-rich cool drink or fruit juice, or eat one tablespoon of sugar or honey or five to six sugary sweets. Make sure those around you also know how to recognise low glucose and how to assist you. Treatment for a person who is in hypoglycaemic crisis or coma If you don?t recognise the early warning signs of low blood glucose, then you will pass out before you have a chance to take sugar by mouth. At this point you will need to be transported to hospital as an emergency and given glucose in a drip. What you can do to prevent going into a hypoglycaemic crisis or coma * Don?t skip meals or snacks and always carry a glucose emergency stash with you * Speak to your doctor if you have experienced an unexplained low ? it could mean your medicine dosage is too high or that you are on the wrong medicine * Adjust your medicine dose to fit in with your exercise and eating schedule. Easing emergencies Diabetic emergencies can arise without any warning. It?s really important to be vigilant for possible signs of a developing problem and to be prepared to deal with the symptoms immediately. In the short-term emergencies can kill you, and in the long-term can lead to serious body and brain injury. Nobody is perfect the very best way to manage diabetic emergencies is to prevent them altogether. In summary * There are two reasons for serious acute emergencies in diabetes ? very high or very low glucose levels * Very high glucose levels can result in a ketoacidotic coma if you have type 1 diabetes or a hyperglycaemic coma if you have type 2 diabetes. They both can lead to multi-organ failure, coma, dehydration and death * Very low glucose levels (hypoglycaemia) are dangerous as they can lead to coma, brain injury and death * Learn to know the signs of a possible complication so you can act quickly * Learn to avoid complications by eating regularly, using your medicine as prescribed and contacting your doctor if you feel unwell. B?s As we all know, this group is very clandestine and seldom volunteer any really interesting information on their activities. They even go so far as to put Option 1 or Option 2 down for their rides so as to confuse outsiders as to their actual movements. Yesterday it was noted that they surprised everyone by opting for Option 3! Anyway, some confidential information was leaked to me that they would be down at the track on Wednesday morning. Although I was not altogether convinced of the validity of this information. I ventured down anyway to see what they were up to. The track was in darkness and I turned away in disappointment to go ride under the city lights. However I spotted their lights winking from afar in the pitch black and Jill?s distinctive voice floated through the still air from a couple of km away. There were 9 of them in total and a motley attired group they were indeed. Doc John looked dashing in his yellow and black outfit that actually fitted him and there were a couple of BW outfits here and there. I also spotted two CL lads in camouflage. It was good to see Bobby back again and he gave us detailed instructions on how and where to ride. I thought, ?there are no hills on the track so how difficult would it be to ride with them??. I was to learn the hard way. Bobby said to set our computers to speed and to stick to 37kph for the first set of 15 laps. We all solemnly set our watches in the pitch black and I thought to myself that this group must live on carrots if they can read in absolute darkness. The first few laps was not too bad but after that everyone?s speedo went haywire as we hurtled around the track at ever increasing speed and ever rising heart rate. My turn to pull for a half lap came too quickly and I managed to claw my way back into the bunch with every last ounce of my willpower. With 2 laps to go (more or less as the group lost count) I found myself in front again much to my horror! Somehow I got through with my heart rate monitor chiming away as it set new record limits. After that I had to pull up and push my heart back into my chest. On the next set I lasted a few laps but did not do any pulling. On the 3rd and final set I set myself a goal of 5 laps but after 2 laps my legs were finished and I left these super fit energiser cyclists whizzing around and around. I was very impressed with their dedication and determination and I can see great times coming from this very fit group this year. I will try again next Wednesday ? anyone else want to join me? It is actually fun!! ww C Group Thursday?s Ride There were 13 C Groupers ready to hit the road. WW declined to lead the sprint intervals as he?d had a hectic workout at the track on Wednesday morning (see excellent report above), so Sandi kindly agreed to help out. The pace was good, and everyone worked hard. WW (in spite of his shot legs?) won the Mall Sprint; not sure whether there was a Chatterton Hotspot winner. S It was a very auspicious occasion as Sticky actually join us for a Cappuccino!! I wonder if this had anything to do with Cameron being away??? There was a large group of us socializing after the ride and it was great to see TT again. ww MTB NEWS KARKLOOF MTB CLUB NIGHT RIDE The Karkloof MTB Club will host a NIGHT RIDE every Friday night beginning FRIDAY 17 FEBRUARY. It is hoped to get a core bunch of guys/girls together that will support this service on a weekly basis. Contact Gill Williams+27836449011 to book your slot. Gill heads up the massage teams at +Sani2c, Joberg2c and Berg & Bush and will be taking a team of therapists to the Epic. Ride the Rock, 3 Stages, Cedarberg. Stillwatersports were the presenting sponsors of this three-day race in the heart of the Cedarberg. It would be my first trip to this part of the world, and there are not many places left I have not been to on my trusty mountain bike, but the Cedarberg as far as remote, tranquil, and off the beaten track goes, will soon become a destination that I will gladly head back to. Small details like arriving at the camp site, finding that the organizers have reserved you the ?deluxe? cottage, complete with race registration boxes and entries already waiting inside for you, goes along way with pro-bike riders, and leaves a ?I will be back? taste in your mouth! It was also great ?Epic prep? for us, complete with our newly recruited chef/nutritionist Sandi Bryan joining us, and our head mechanic Swen Lauer. It?s a fantastic backup team and a pleasure to have with us, plus we get spoilt with some of the best tasting nutrition known to sportsman! We were also joined by Patrick Baransky, head of Nedbanks sports sponsorships and our key man in introducing us to one of the most passionate wine makers we?ve found, albeit in the middle of nowhere with ?altitude?. Stage 1, 85km, 1550m The first day of Ride the Rock is the toughest of the three, and the terrain, the conditions and altitude would make for tough racing. Also many of the teams here were using it as preparation for the Epic in just six weeks time. I guess the rugged and rocky terrain will also?iron? out any last minute issues with bikes and or equipment choices that may still need to bemade. Despite the field of riders being fairly small, it still had some good quality riders, and it wouldn?t detract anything from the intensity of the racing up front. Dave George was eager to get the racing started, and within five kilometers, there was a small group of about six riders with most of the top riders in it. We continued to ride hard at the front, and once the hills started rolling on, we started riding a really hard tempo, and soon, we had a gap over the rest of the field. Nico Pfitzenmaier was riding well, and the very rocky descends and sandy jeep tracks suited his riding style, and he joined us after Dave had to stop to inflate his rear tire, which had lost air. The most technical and dangerous descend of about 4km we negotiated with caution, as Nico managed to put about a 30second gap into us down here. Once down this section, we were faced with a monster climb of about 5km at 10% gradient, and we quickly took back our time over Nico, plus then drove the tempo on to put a further minute into him by the top. The kilometers from here to the finished ticked by very slowly, and the harsh terrain definitely took the sting out the legs, but at least we were together and could make use of each other taking turns into the headwind home. Nico had to soldier on alone, but held off Team Blend, Charles Keey and Dave Morrison to take third, whilst team mate Dave and I dueled out a sprint finish. (Dave obviously coming out second from that one!) Provisional Results: 1st Kevin Evans (Nedbank Team 360life) 3hrs21 2nd Dave George (Nedbank Team360life) same time 3rd Nico Pfitzenmaier (Rob Daniel) Stage 2, 60km, 950m Fortunately with the cooler temperatures, the start was pushed back to 07:00am, giving us another hour of sleep, and although it can get unbearably hot in this area, riding conditions over the weekend were absolutely perfect. Day 2 was a much ?smoother? day and the trails wouldn?t be as rough as the previous. The group rolled together through the beautiful Cedarberg Valley, until we hit some great singletrack. The racing started here for the Pro?s, and soon we were only a handful of riders. After around 20km, we started the climbs for the day, and I rode a hard enough tempo that I was soon alone in the front. Not long thereafter, Dave rode across to me, and from here we started another ?team trial? and rode consistently hard to try hold our gap over the chasing riders. At this point we thought that Nico would be chasing us, but after another 20km, Dave Morisson and Erik Kleinhans joined us. Unfortunately for Erik, no sooner had they caught us and he had yet another puncture which would take him out of contention for the stage. Dave Morisson was riding as hard as he could to try and get some back on Nico for the overall, whilst Dave George and I just followed him for the last 15km to the finish, where Morisson took a well deserved stage win. We were happy to finish safely in second and third, gaining a little more time on the overall, and not having any mechanical issues. The real highlight for us on the day would be meeting David Niewoudt with Pat Baransky, who gave us a ?personalized? wine tasting experience of some of the most exquisite wines we?ve come across. We even managed to persuade him to throw a few nice bottles into the mix for the final days racing, just for some added incentive! (We may also have had a few glasses that evening) Provisional Results: 1st Dave Morrison (blend) 2hrs17 2nd Kevin Evans (Nedbank Team360life) same time 3rd Dave George (Nedbank Team360life) same time Stage 3, 50km, 800m The last stage was rumored to be the ?queen? stage in terms of technical, singletrack riding, and it definitely lived up to its pre-race hype. We climbed from the start, all the way up the side of ?Wolfberg Cracks? mountain, and once near the top, we would descend a tight, loose, sandy, rocky downhill that would prove to be as much of a challenge as some of the most technical routes I?ve ridden anywhere. Nico knew this trail fairly well, and put that knowledge, along with his technical skills to good use to apply some real pressure down here. By the bottom of the trail, I was a minute down, and Dave George, Morisson and Keeyprobably a further minute behind me. I knew I needed to chase Nico alone, and the legswere still feeling relatively good, so I managed to make up that minute in the space of the next 10km. Once I caught him, I had only to sit on as he was trying to race himself into second place overall. With 15km left, through the rough jeep track, I attacked Nico and rode away to the finish alone. Dave had also caught him through this last section, so our first and second place for the overall was secure. Although this stage was short in distance, it was action packed and resembled more of a ?cross country? style race with some incredible trails. Thanks to the race organizers for the effort they put in to make such great routes through this barren landscape. Provisional Results: 1st Kevin Evans (Nedbank Team360life) 1hr55 2nd Nico Pfitzenmaier (Robert Daniel) 1hr56 3rd Dave George (Nedbank Team360life) 1hr56 Provisional Results Overall: 1st Kevin Evans (Nedbank Team360life) 7hrs30 2nd Dave George (Nedbank Team360Life) 3rd Nico Pfitzenmaier (Robert Daniel) 4th Dave Morisson (Blend) 5th Charles Keey (Blend) Next race, we head back to that town, Tulbach, for the second race in the MTN Ultra Marathon series. Should be an interesting race with riders starting to hit some good form, and a testing route that lies ahead. Till then, cheers. Warwick Weedon : Please forward all articles & reports by noon Tuesday, thanks. Dear Members, If anyone does not know TT aka Trevor Thompson, please look in the letterhead above ? he is the guy in the white shirt with a bald head. This photo was taken before a Midmar Notts race a couple of years ago where he was the Race Director. ROAD My article on my ride with the BB?s last Wednesday aroused some interest and I would like to thank everyone for their positive comments. It is heartening to see that the majority of cyclists have a great sense of humour and are able to laugh at themselves. After all, we are all riding for the fun and pleasure it brings us!! ROAD CAPTAIN?S REPORT MIDMAR NOTTS CYCLE RACE Firstly, I would like to thank all the committee members that helped with the organisation of this race, aswell as the members who volunteered on the day. Without your help, a race of this size (over 800 entries), would not be possible. Your help was most appreciated. Standing on the side of the road, holding a flag and sometimes taking abuse from drivers, is not funny, but in the end, your help has helped to keep everyone safe. There have been very positive comments from cyclists about our race, so that is good news. There was a very unfortunate accident, and the Traffic department abandoned the race. The cyclists accepted this in a very mature manner, and ambled back to the dam in respect. Trevor Thompson was involved with a taxi and his injuries are a broken hand , dislocated elbow, fractured knee cap and severe bruising. This is an unbelievable escape from an accident of this nature. Trevor is at present in ICU at Medi Clinic Hospital. We wish him a speedy recovery. All the best Trevor. We know you will be out of that bed soon! The Argus is in just over two weeks time. Final training is under way at the moment, and we hope everyone will be 'peaking' for the race. Doc John is looking good and slim, so we can expect good things to happen. Ollie is making a good come back after his accident some 7 months ago. The "diesel" engine is revving!! Keep it up, Ollie. Good to see you enjoying your riding again. The TIME FREIGHT SOUTH AFRICAN ROAD and TIME TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS takes place in Durban from 22-25 March. It will be great to see lots of our members participating in this event. You will be participating in your own age group, so need not worry that you will be riding with guys in a younger age category. Lets get a good entry from BW cyclists! For more details, visit the website www.cyclingsa.com . Entries close soon, so get your entry in now. Keep the wheels turning Jill Marshalling with Charles at the turn for the 30km event did not preclude me from responsibly using my camera on occasion. Should any person want an electronic original, as opposed to the very compressed images I attach herewith, if he/she contacts me at "sanders at futurenet.co.za ", I shall happily send them on. Regards, Larry Sanders Thanks all the marshalls that assisted with the Midmar -Notts race on Sunday. Your dedication , time and effort was really appreciated. When a friend hurts, we all hurt with him. It is good to see that he is on his way to a full recovery, and we wish him everything of the very best in the coming weeks. We look forward to having him back on the road with us, leading the pack. Tuesday?s Ride We had a sizeable group today. Peter was back from San Lameer with a very smart new leisure vehicle ? looks lekker, bru! Gordon had given his apologies ? he is taking part in the first two stages of the ride to Cape Town ahead of the Argus Cycle Tour, and we wish him an excellent ride. Farouk is finding the training helpful for his Argus and Pete must be enjoying the group, cos he has not given up on us! We love having you with us, Pete, and hope you?re here to stay. Once at Makro we broke up into groups and did pole sprints. This was a really good training session, and we returned to Virgin having had a good workout. GG made an observation that we?d all got it wrong -- we said we were doing pole sprints, but then we sprinted BETWEEN the poles...! Thursday?s Ride ? Meet @ Virgin @ 4:55 for normal ride ? to include a number of sprints Tuesday?s Ride ? Meet @ Virgin @ 4:55 ? pace-lining at Makro Saturday?s Ride ? Meet @ Steers @ 5:00am for 90km ride to Inchanga, out via Fox Hill and back via Polly?s MTB NEWS TERRY?S TALES What, with the inclement weather, private school mid term long weekend break and our own Midmar Notts on Sunday, MTB news certainly is at a premium. Talking of the Midmar Notts, we all join in wishing Trevor Thompson a speedy and full recovery from the many injuries which he sustained in his horrific accident on Sunday. Our prayers and best wishes go with you Trevor. Last Wednesday?s Ride I am convinced that the Lord makes it rain on Wednesdays to punish golfers, leaving us, like last Wednesday, to again suffer the collateral damage. Nonetheless 25 or so of us still managed to enjoy the drizzly wet conditions. All except Justin, who like me found his glasses useless in the persistent drizzle so had to take them off. Now without his glasses Justin doesn?t look so good. Literally and figuratively. So much so that he never saw the big rock on the single track that sent him over the handlebars and badly buckled his 29inch front wheel. Fortunately for Justin he only bruised his shoulder. A very big thank you to the ever helpful good Samaritan Andrew Turner who escorted Justin safely back to the car park. Justin, I think, may well agree with Tom Stoppard, a British playwright who was knighted in 1997 who once said ?I think age is a very high price to pay for maturity??? But come to think of it, can someone who is very nearly 70 years old, who rides a bicycle in the forest on a rainy afternoon without his glasses be considered mature? We have 4 hand cyclists entries for the race and are looking for 4 cyclists to accompany them and give assistance on route. I'm not sure how many of them are doing the half marathon and how many are doing the full marathon (42km). The cyclists would have to be at the start by 4.30 a.m. and should be finished by 11a.m. I was hoping you could ask your members, via your weekly news letter, to assist us in this matter. Those interested can contact me on 033 3421246 (w) or 0735711164. Dear Members, Yvonne Thompson has advised that Trevor has improved so much that he was discharged from hospital this morning and is now tucked up in his own bed. She would like to thank everyone for the support they have given her and Trevor this past week and hopes it will continue. AWARDS EVENING Our club mountain bike, downhill and road awards evening took place on Friday at the Savannah Estate in Hayfields. Please see pictures attached. We are hoping to have some track awards for next year! The venue was superb and we were entertained by none other than our own pop idol, Erin Fourie, and three of our PMB stalwarts, Kim Phillips, Nick Floros and Johan Wykerd. Two sets of our new kit arrived in time for Doctor John and myself to model them - so all in all a fun and well organised evening was enjoyed by all. We are very proud of our winners, who are listed below. Well done, and may your cycling go from strength to strength! We also would like to thank Craig Leat who organised the evening, Riaan Holtzhausen for the sound, and to all the members and their visitors who attended this most auspicious occasion. A big thank you goes to our sponsor Time Freight for the tog bags and bottles that were handed out at the end of the evening. Our club is strong and well - thank you to you all. For those wanting to know what Omnium means ? here it is: Omnium From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia An omnium is a multiple race event in track cycling . Historically the omnium has had a variety of formats. Currently, and for the 2012 Olympics , the omnium as defined by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) consists of the following six events: 1) Flying lap (against the clock) 2) Points race 30 km for elite men, 20 km for elite women, 15 km for junior men, 10 km for junior women 3) Elimination 4) Individual pursuit 4000 metres for elite men, 3000 metres for junior men and elite women, 2000 metres for junior women 5) Scratch race 6) Time trial : 1km men, 500 metres women [1] Points are awarded in reverse order. The rider who finishes first in an event receives one point, the second rider will get two points and so on. The rider with the fewest points after all events is the winner. When two riders are tied on points, the combined time of the three time trials will break the tie amongst the riders. A rider must have completed every event in the omnium. The omnium was re-introduced into the World Championships as a five race format for men in 2007 and for women in 2009. The omnium was changed in 2010 by the UCI to include the elimination race in 2010 and the distances of the events were lengthened to favor endurance cyclists.[2] The omnium will replace the individual pursuit , the points race , and the madison at the Summer Olympic Games beginning in 2012 . The change was quite controversial.[3] ww CONTACT DETAILS SPONSORS Gill Bure ? Chairperson 082-772-9310 Tom Bassage ?
