Team 1 produced another 9 pointer to move into second and are starting to look a very solid setup. Team eight more than doubled their return after a pathetic start and still have one of their matches to play. Another bizarre match unfolded on Court 3 where Raj Kokup-prasad managed to give up a 13-1 lead in the first set to go down 3-0 to Rashid. On the same court Graham Metcalfe's power of youth and exhuberance was completely undone by the pensioner Roger Green. Apparently Roger was spotted at Fields Pharmacy last saturday checking out the latest models of walkers!!! Certainly puts Grahams performance into perspective. This is to certify than on 31st January 2011, on Court 2 at Collegians Squash Club, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa at 19h15 one Kelly Aiton ID Number 8612015081083, WON her squash game!!! Shot Kelly. Zaheer turned up hoping to give Johan a run for his money, but unfortunately old "Hackie" had visited the grooming palour early in the day for one standard issue prison services haircut, which added an additional 3m/sec to his court speed, blistering past Zaheer 3-0. The bring and braai after was well attended with the battle of the salads moving up a notch with Kelly's potatoe salad showing an appearence. Rick's salad was finished within the hour while we still had one whole plate of potatoe salad left for Squeaks afterwards. So either Kelly over catered or the salad tasted crap. After 15 beers I thought Kelly's salad tasted quite good!! Anyway different strokes for different folks. Well we had a good bunch of late hangers on remain, as documented in the image above. Such a wealth of mature male talent in one location accompanied by wit and intelligent conversation, just can't fathom out why none of the girls stayed??? Things are now starting to become very tight with only 4 points seperating 1st and 4th and only 10 points top from bottom!! Still everything to play for with a further 6 rounds to go, guess it will be down to who uses their bench best. Well we had some humdingers last night starting with Julian Golacre suprising our young golden boy Brendon. Think it had much to do with Julian's luminous shirt, they only needed the court lights for the first set with the glow from Julian's jumper providing adequate illumination for the following 2. Next door Oupa Chris had his hands full marking a very close fought affair between John and Eugene and by close I do not mean on the score sheet, but in physical contact. Once these two brutes had managed to squeeze their way through the door onto Court 2 there was not much room left for manouevering around ones opponent. The referee's report indicates there was an exchange of handbags deep in the second set while video footage suggests John headbutted Eugenes racket early in the third. John eventually emerged victorious from this bruising encounter. Any hope for more light-hearted entertainment on Court 4 was dashed by the "battle of the bellies" between Erwin and Gavin, with these two giants pounding around the court it registered 6 on the Richter scale!! Just across the isle on Court 5 the petite little Kelly had the most frustrating of evenings, but good golly the language my girl!! I was unaware that there were so many "F's" in the statement "I can't believe I missed that". Another good turn out at the braai afterwards with the braai grid packed with sizzeling steaks, wors, chicken etc, etc, no one went home hungry. Another 3 wannabee salads arrived but again it was Rick's salad which was cleaned up first. Squeeks certainly didn't mind though. Remember next week is our first SPONSORED EVENING and the squash club will be cooking up a storm of peri-peri chicken wings for all to savour. Next week (14th Feb) and the following week (21 Feb) we will be without Court 2. So we have booked the Courts for these 2 weeks from 4pm. Next week (14th) we need to fit all the matches for Team 7 vs Team 9 on the other 4 courts. If any players can start early from 4pm please arrange with your opponent so that we can fit all the other fixtures in. I am sure you have noticed that our sponsored evening co-incides with Valentines Day, so please feel free to express your romantic side on the night. Work pressures, seconding on the Dusi, blah, blah, blah. Anyway here goes. Bugsie's side recorded their first victory of the tournament (Bugsy himself still lost his game) whalloping Team 10 11-4. Team 9 produced the other shock of the night, after languishing at the bottom of the log for 3 weeks, everything came together on the night as they blistered past Team 7 10-5. It appears that one late night a week is just too much for Roger the pensioner as he got thrashed 3-0 by the recently retired Jenny Wilson. Well early night tonite then Roger. I am missing the score card for Team 5 vs Team 8 which took place on Court 1, if anyone could assist it would be greatly appreciated. The score card probably went missing because this is where one of the ultimate "loose while you're ahead" stories of the modern game occurred. It was a match up between John Wills and Eugene Oosthuizen. John threw the gauntlet down for a ladder challenge match which Eugene accepted. After completing their first 3 sets John had sneaked ahead 2-1. They then took a break to let all the other fixtures be completed before getting back on court. John thought he was home and dry for a 3-1 victory but the break had rejuvinated Eugene who came storming back to level at 2-2. With Eugene leading 5-1 in the 5th John had the most amazing blow out of a squash shoe I have ever seen. Talk about deploying the air bags, there was nothing left of this critter following the explosion. So picture the scene Eugene with a 4 point cushion is now facing an opponent with one shoe and a bare foot, it was going to be like playing a one-legged man. Would you believe it Eugene managed somehow to loose the set and the challenge match!!! Gosh, lucky he wasn't playing Oscar Pistorius, he would have got pumped 5-0. Certainly brings new meaning to the phrase "getting leg-over". The sponsered evening was well attended, even a few girls stayed, and 150 wings were demolished. Yours truly received a Valentines message from a "Secret Admirer" on the scoresheet for Court 3. As this was an all male fixture, this was a bit worrying. Team 9 produced the other shock of the night, after languishing at the bottom of the log for 3 weeks, everything came together on the night as they blistered past Team 7 10-5. It appears that one late night a week is just too much for Roger the pensioner as he got thrashed 3-0 by the recently retired Jenny Wilson. Well early night tonite then Roger. I am missing the score card for Team 5 vs Team 8 which took place on Court 1, if anyone could assist it would be greatly appreciated. The score card probably went missing because this is where one of the ultimate "loose while you're ahead" stories of the modern game occurred. It was a match up between John Wills and Eugene Oosthuizen. John threw the gauntlet down for a ladder challenge match which Eugene accepted. After completing their first 3 sets John had sneaked ahead 2-1. They then took a break to let all the other fixtures be completed before getting back on court. John thought he was home and dry for a 3-1 victory but the break had rejuvinated Eugene who came storming back to level at 2-2. With Eugene leading 5-1 in the 5th John had the most amazing blow out of a squash shoe I have ever seen. Talk about deploying the air bags, there was nothing left of this critter following the explosion. So picture the scene Eugene with a 4 point cushion is now facing an opponent with one shoe and a bare foot, it was going to be like playing a one-legged man. Would you believe it Eugene managed somehow to loose the set and the challenge match!!! Gosh, lucky he wasn't playing Oscar Pistorius, he would have got pumped 5-0. Certainly brings new meaning to the phrase "getting leg-over". The sponsered evening was well attended, even a few girls stayed, and 150 wings were demolished. Yours truly received a Valentines message from a "Secret Admirer" on the scoresheet for Court 3. As this was an all male fixture, this was a bit worrying. The challenge list and rules,k etc are up on the notice board, so please get going and get those results in as soon as possible so that we can submit our teams by the end of March. We have a cut off date of the 28th March so that we can finalize the teams on the 29th. Meaning you only have 36 days left! If you have not taken the time to challenge we will have to assume your playing ability and unfortunately 9th league has limited space, so the only way to avoid disappointment is to get those results up (talk about having to nag!) There has also been some changes to the ladies league which is as follows: B League - this is now going to be called A League and will be a 5 member teams. The number 1 player will be an ex 3 or 4 players from the previous "A League division". SHould this player not be available to play she will either call in another "ex A League" player or the team may elect to move up and call in a reserve at no 5. Positions 2 -5 will be the normal "B League" ladies. An example team would be: 2011 B League was 1 Debbie 2 Di 3 Kate 4 Kay Reserve : Liz 2012 A League 1 Janine 2 Rita 3 Debbie 4 Di 5 Kay Reserve : Liz C League - is now going to be referred to as "B League" and this will be the same format as for the previous "C League" We have enter 2 sides into this section this year. Team 1 turned in another rock solid 9 to put some daylight between themselves and Teams 3 and 4 chasing with 4 fixtures to go. Team 10 performed according to their number being the 10th Team on the log - pretty crap. On Court 5 Faheem discovered the meaning of the term "errand runner" as Johan pushed him from font left to back right to back left to front right ..... and again front left, back right, back left, front right etc, etc. Johan complained of pressure sores afterwards having to stand on the tee for the entire three sets. Brendon the teenage mutant ninja turtle, complete with bandanna and shades, breezed past Erwin the hunchback of Notre Dame, who had been slaving over a copier for the previous 14 hours of the day. Brendon even managed to finish his maths homework between sets and did 356 court sprints after the game just to get a decent workout. Roy had a bit of a scare against Roger, probably side tracked by trying to work out where he was on the log - focus Roy focus!! The bring and braai was well attended again and must say Rita's salad put up a good fight, although I only took home half a leaf and 2ml of dressing. Check ya all next week. The rest of his team weren't upto the heat either as Team 6 recorded the worst game score of the tournament, a pathetic 2!! Team 1 look like they have opened a significant gap on the rest and certainly have one hand on the trophy, just don't cock it up over the next few weeks guys. Ross and Erwin chose to play a late game and seeing that the mecury had plummeted to a mere 46C when they got on court, they decided to do the full monty and play 5 sets!!! We all thought squash was not an Extreme sport. I myself came up against Brendon earlier in the evening and when I saw what he was wearing I reolized why Derick was late. His ninja turtle bandanna had been replaced with a little alice band number, he had his hair permed and wore tinted glasses!! Derick must have been champing at the bit to get this lot into the bakkie - Brendon looked just like my Granny. Anyway once we got on court I played just like HIS Granny and got thumped. Great to have OB back on court, even though he was a little rusty still managed to sneak a game from Roy, although it was the first one and after that things deteriorated a little. Despite the oppressive temperatures we had a good turnout at the bring and braai. Again a lot of intelligent conversation was to be heard. Only Rick's salad put in an appearence and AGAIN I went home with an empty bowl. However, we did have Chris's potjie this time - scrumptious, although only those who stayed until 2 am were able to get a little taste. Chris, next week you will need to start the poitjie on Monday!! After being whipped by John Bronner, Gavin had a lot of baggage to take home with him - bruised pride, desktop computer, squash bag, full-face helmet and 150kg of prime South African beef - and all of this on his twin turbo "Flymo" scooter with full warranty and service plan provided by Berry's Mowers - talk about Ticky the Clown.
